This Monday we served 58 people who struggle with housing. Making our year total of serving to 629 people since Jan 1. Leslie made home made scallop potatoes with spiral ham, garlic bread and salad. It got eaten up, and we had one more stop, so Leslie went home and grabbed up her leftovers and the Sour Dough bread her husband had opened and was going to eat (LOL). She made us 6 more meals and everyone except one person received a meal. He received a gift card to McDonalds instead. Johnny said it was the most delicious Scallop potatoes he ever had. Evidently Leslie had a blister on her hand from peeling so many potatoes. Thanks to Mary who helped Leslie serve up the meals from the back of her car.

This is from one year ago... we have been doing this for eight years. I have been involved for six years, President for two years. Please join us by following our FB page @Tent City Helpers and group pg @TENT CITY HELPERS. With the new laws coming up in October we must come together, our village of caring and compassionate people, to help find shelter for our growing homeless population... our website is www.tentcityhelpers.org if you would like to find out more or to donate. Thanks in advance! Gail Harvey, Tent City Helpers, 900 NW Waterlily Pl. Jensen Beach, Fl 34957.
Here we are at the last stop of the evening at McDonald's Treasure Coast Mall. You see Dee in the background digging out a blanket and a belt for our tall friend. The belt fit and everyone was happy... our friends received a large tent for two people, grocery bags, Marty tickets, Gatorade, a blanket and we are arranging a bicycle for them. Thanks Dee for being an awesome volunteer. Finding all the goodies for our special folks... We appreciate our volunteers!

Our friend Bill asked if we had work boots? It just so happened these work boots were donated and we had packed them and they fit Bill perfectly. He was happy he could head to work on Tuesday. It takes a village...
If you have work boots that are gently used and would like to donate our supplies are low. We also are in the need of new or gently used Jeans sizes 30,32,33,34 and 36.
We have an abundance of other items.. Thanks to our Compassionate and Generous Community. If you would like to donate monetarily you can go to www.tentcityhelpers.com and hit the donate button. Thanks in advance!

The first photo is a crappy shot I grappled with my bag and I-phone to get on Monday. Ron (our nature savant) pointed out these gorgeous Rosetta Spoonbills as they flew directly over our heads on Monday at our McDonald's stop. They are just about gone when I got the photo. Dee said to Ron, "I love the way you are always looking up!"
Once again Ron shows us something in interesting in nature. The other two photos I took on Green River Parkway a few months ago... I love the Rosetta Spoonbills too.

Our hearts grew a bit...
Here is one of our readers, James. He is always looking for good books and we always carry a mini library and reader glasses. Here he is looking for a new read from our books. Thanks to Nancie Burke for helping to pack 54 grocery bags this week. This is what was in our grocery bags this week. A community made snack bag, A MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) ((from the Treasure Coast Food Bank)), Propel Water (Expansion Church), Can of Lasagna (from Renato and Josephine's Restaurant) and a banana and orange (donated by Cheri Chauvin and MaryAnne Centrone). A Huge Thanks to Kathy Kernan who made a delicious sausage and vege casserole. It was probably more work than she expected feeding 50 people from the back of her car. I know she felt the reward of her hard work cooking when the last person we served at McDonald's Treasure Coast Mall, was so hungry he excused himself when he got a plate and said, "I have to sit down and eat I am so hungry... its been a long time since I have had a meal." To feed someone who is truly hungry is a blessing.... THANKS Kathy for being our blessing too! We appreciate you as did the 50 people you served.

This was yesterday at Memorial Park. We served 49 people without houses, bringing our total for the year to 512 served. Thanks to these people, Jerry Walters from our Board of Directors, Dee our Bus ticker distributor, Mary helped Kathy serve up a homemade hot meal. Tony in the center always asks us to take a photo. Here he is with two grocery bags, two meals, two Gatorades, a cap and a radio. Tony's friend was sick and he was getting food for her too. It is amazing how most of our friends are looking out for each other. So kind....

Thanks to the City of Stuart Council for approving our application for ARPA funds. These funds are dedicated specifically to providing free Marty bus tickets to allow our clients to access medical treatment, job opportunities and resources available throughout Martin County. This is Peggy, our Martin County Transit Specialist, happy for the large ticket order. She had been riding the buses and having the community fill out surveys. Peggy told me ridership has gone up. I think we are part of the reason ridership is going up, a win-win for our clients and the bus system. Addressing a top need of our local unhoused residents - Transportation. 🚐

This was our last stop, last week at the Treasure Coast Mall. 6:15-6:30. We had served by this time, 46 people who are homeless, at our 7 different scheduled stops. That makes our total of 414 dinners served this year. These are our volunteers Caryl and Kenny. They helped our friend Bill get his hot Butter Chicken dinner, snack bag, Gatorade and camp/hygiene goods loaded up on his bike. Bill only had a T-shirt on and it was cold on Monday. We dug deep in our winter weather bin and found this extra large Rainbird jacket and a wool skull cap. LOL! then I realized it was my husband's jacket he had donated. I almost gave out one of his jackets by accident last year. Haha.

Here is our last stop on the cold 🥶 Monday night at McDonald's Treasure Coast Mall. Our friend greeted us in shorts, slides, a short sleeve shirt and a hat (that we gave him during Covid). As we pulled out warm clothes his size he immediately put them on... We gave Ron, Jeans, socks, a sweater, a hoodie and a skull cap. He ate a hot meal, took a grocery bag and all the little bits and pieces he uses through the week. As he walks away you can see his two bags and a Gatorade in his hands. Thanks to Dave Ricci, Carl Puma and Oats Reis our warehouse manager. We moved from a 10ft x 10ft unit to a 15 x 10 unit for less money per month. These guys built another shelving unit and moved all are camping supplies, Foodbank MREs, and additional winter clothing. Thanks we got it all done by 12:30. Great team effort!
We need our local government to designate public property for public sleeping and camping. A place like the fairgrounds would work. If we have no shelters how can we arrest people for sleeping. The people who already poor and homeless now would have a criminal record, making work even harder to fine.

This is our Burger King stop on Monday. This is a former student of mine with Leslie. Leslie is modeling the Lands End Jacket someone donated and John has the sweatshirt he wanted. John ended up getting a hot meal, groceries, batteries, wipes, the Land's End Jacket and Sweatshirt. These people that are homeless are mostly all OUR RESIDENTS. John went to our public schools and I was his teacher. We need more support for our students in special education transition to adulthood. We need a local shelter to house the homeless. Too many of my former ESE students are in the woods soon after graduation. (John not his real name)

This is Christy and Leslie joking around. We gave Christy the last of the lettuce from our deliveries.. Leslie said that's on my diet and Christy offered her some...
So glad to see Christy smile. Last week, during the horrific storm we found her and her partner huddled under the Shell Station awning. They had someone in a pickup truck come to their camp and slash the tents and steal the couple of valuables they owned. Meanwhile my phone was going off with Tornado Warnings. The people living in the woods are vulnerable and victims of crime way too often. Christy reluctantly called the police to report the crime. Then she thought the police would come back and trespass her, knowing where her camp was located. The good news is Christy is a survivor and has been sober for awhile now. The police did not come back and trespass her yet.
We had another story a couple of weeks ago, where one of the women camping alone, had been trespassed three times in a weekend. She moved her camp three different times hoping that she would not be found out. Evidently she told me the same police officer helped her find a piece of county land that she could hideout at and not trespassed again for now. This lady works and collected some feminine hygiene products from us. (can you imagine all this and your cycle too) Thank you to this police officer too!
Thanks to all the police (Crystal Nash, officer Adams ) and community members (Joe Hogan) that help our residents that are homeless. We see you and appreciate the kindness!

Caryl was in charge of distributing the bus tickets, Mary organized the hot meal of vegetable lasanga, salad and a little cake, Jordan and Beverly used their car and carried and distributed food bags, MREs, Gatorades and Ensures. I had the camping supplies in my SUV. Since both Beverly's and my SUV were both red I got mixed up a couple of times and walked to the wrong SUV. haha.
Tony is the rose between all the thorns.... Tony is always keen for a photo and reminded me to take a photo. Here he is with Marty Bus tickets in his hand, a jacket, sweatshirt, and a large food bag (you can see the orange) with a Gatorade.
We this is the third week we have offered Jackets/sweatshirts to everyone we serve. We do not need any more clothes or jackets donated. We have an abundance of warm clothes and jackets to distribute. Here I am with Peggy Bussard, the transit specialist for the Martin County Board of County Commissioners. Tent City Helpers were able to purchase bus tickets with the ARPA funding we received from the Stuart City Commissioners. This is definitely a win-win. We are supporting the Marty Bus System by purchasing and giving out bus tickets to our friends that are homeless. Transportation is an issue for most of our residents that are homeless. Thank you to the Stuart City Commissioners for seeing the value in trying to get free transport to our local homeless.
I told Peggy she blends into the American Flag. She commented that she thought she looked like Where's Waldo... Haha.

This was before the Tornado warnings. Tony and Bonnie have on the T-shirts we gave them from Thrivent that say "Live Generously". Another Cinderfella story. This gentleman we have just recently met. He told us he needed work boots. He had bought a pair from Walmart for $20 but he said they killed his feet. This was our last stop on Monday. Kathy had stopped earlier in the week to give this gentleman a snack bag and tell him about Tent City Helpers. He met us at McDonalds in front of the Treasure Coast Mall, which usually between 6:15-6:30pm. He was so happy to get a small tent, a hot meal, a skull cap, MRE's Meals ready to eat and groceries. Monty told us he was in a bad car accident and was in the hospital for three months and lost everything because he could not work and pay for his apartment and car. He still walks with a limp. If you see Monty you may want to give him a McDonald's gift card so he does not go hungry.. It takes a village to keep our homeless residents not hungry.

Thank you to the person who donated this tent to Tent City Helpers. We were so happy to pass it on to a camper who really appreciates the "high class" tent. She takes care of her things and has run into some bad luck, with a car accident that took her form of income. Merry Christmas to our friends without homes!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Look what Dianne Elizabeth dropped off. Nerf Flying Dog Discs for our homeless dogs for Christmas. Plus she gave us bike locks and bike lights. These are very much needed as we give out bikes. The bike lights keep our people that are homeless safer at night and the bike locks help to keep the bike secure. Thank you so much Dianne! These will bring some joy in the giving season.

Here we are, Monday, at Flagler Park stop under the Roosevelt Bridge. Jerry and I are awarding Nicole a new portable radio for being a "Winner" in our joke contest. You see Nicole's big smile on her face, a plate of home made spaghetti, salad and a cupcake in one hand and an ice cold Gatorade under her arm. Nicole has a beautiful smile. This photo really makes me happy.

Wow! what a great response from all our supporters for Giving Tuesday. We had donations through Facebook that totaled $2540.00. We also received checks that were mailed and delivered, and then a large amount through PayPal. In total at this time we have fundraised $5893.00 for Giving Tuesday. That's definitely at least two thumbs up!
Thank you everyone that made a special donation to Tent City Helpers Giving Tuesday!

It's almost time for Giving Tuesday, tomorrow November 28th. This is a watch we provided for one of our friends who had no phone and no way to tell time. Patrick asked us if we could help so he could get to work on time. Giving Tuesday has been our greatest fundraiser each year for the past 5 years. We depend on Giving Tuesday to keep us funded.

Thanks to our friend Cheri Martin Chauvin! She has been buying the fresh fruit we put in the snack bags each week. Here are 50 bananas and 45 oranges she dropped off today. I know when someone is really hungry, because as we talk they will reach into their grocery bag, we just gave them and grab the banana and started eating it as we talk. A banana is like perfect nutrition and the orange is a yummy natural immunity boost.
It takes a village and Cheri helps us in many supportive ways. She works two jobs, takes care of a family and extended family, is a great friend and still finds time to support us with this weekly task. Thank you Cheri you are amazing!

Tuesday November 28, is Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a Global day to do good. This is a text and photo sent to me by one of our homeless women recently. Shelly had been complaining that sleeping on the ground was making her back back worse. We were able to meet her and give her an inflatable mattress, food from the Treasure Coast Foodbank, community made snack bags and a McDonald's gift card. She was so appreciative that she sent me this sweet text and photo of her tent all set up. The tent is a four person Ozark we provided earlier this year costing $39 and the inflatable was $24. this gives an idea what a $63 dollar donation can provide.
Please consider a donation to Tent City Helpers on Giving Tuesday or before to help us provide the basics to our local homeless. You can either go to https://www.facebook.com/donate/1542349133240918/ our Facebook Fundraiser for Giving Tuesday or send your donation to Tent City Helpers, 900 NW Waterlily Pl. Here we have Debbie serving up a meal for William at our Burger King stop. I had lost my prescription glasses last week and revisited all the stops looking for them. When I left Burger King the next day there was Ray out the back holding a sign. I stopped and rolled down my window and asked him if he had seen any glasses the day before. He said no 😢, But he did say the homemade meatloaf was delicious!

This was our last stop at McDonald's Treasure Coast Mall. This is Yamilla with the Yaya Por Vida nonprofit. Yamilla is riding with us once a month to do her outreach here in Martin County. She carries a "Harm Reduction Kit". Here she is showing Bill how to use the Narcan Nasal spray if he suspects someone has overdosed with Opioids. The winners of our joke contest were Sandy and Nicole. We did not see Nicole yesterday but we did see Sandy. She was a happy camper to hear the news and pick her radio up.
I was surprised at how many of our friends without homes had difficultly with the task of telling a joke and seemingly have language issues. One of our friends last week said, "Miss Gail I can not tell a joke, I don't even get jokes, You know I have a brain injury." This week he told us that he practiced Sandy's joke all week and can now tell a joke. He then told us Sandy's joke... This made my heart sing.
We would love to purchase a radio for all our homeless friends for Christmas. It really is a necessity during hurricane season. They are not so lonely with tunes playing and get vital weather information. This radio cost $20, and has a clock on it.
If you would like to donate so we can buy more radios that would be awesome. You can donate through our webpage at www.tentcityhelpers.com. Click the donate button and you can donate through PayPal or your credit card. Alternatively you can send us a check to Tent City Helpers, 900 NW Waterlily Pl, Jensen Beach, Fl 34957 and include a note for the donation to go for radios. Thanks in advance. You could bring more great smiles to our struggling homeless community.

We served 56 people that are homeless yesterday at our Monday deliveries. The Stuart Church of Christ ladies made a delicious hot meal with our donated cold Gatorade (Renato’s & Josephine’s Restaurant). They also received a grocery bag with food from the food bank and community made snack bag, with water. Then one SUV is full of hygiene products, clothes, bug spray and camping basics.

Sad to say that our friend who was homeless passed away Monday a few hours after we stopped and delivered her supplies. She died in a tent we gave her, on a cot we had given her. We have helped Rene over the past two years. Whatever she needed, personal hygiene, food, Ensures and camping supplies we got for her. She didn’t want to go to the hospital or anywhere she could not take her cat. We will really miss Rene. She surely is in a better place now. Thanks to our donors we were able to shop at Beall's Outlet and get all this for $70. We met the cutest kids last week. When we left the young boy called out, "Don't forget I need shoes and I'm a size 3." Well we got the size 3 shoes and a bit more too. We could not leave out his younger sister. Mom was really happy!
*I did not even realize when we bought the shoes they light up. Mom said those are his favorite type of shoes...
